AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — At the upcoming Super Bowl, keep a sharp eye open for Audi of America among the beer commercials. The German brand known for turning up its nose at such plebeian exercises as American football games, will be making its first advertising appearance at the Super Bowl in 17 years.
The 60-second spot, which will debut during the first quarter of the Super Bowl, is a take on The Godfather, Audi of America said in a statement on Tuesday. "Audi selected The Godfather as a thematic foundation for its Super Bowl ad because the film expresses the idea of a new power rising in an established hierarchy," the automaker said in a highbrow explanation of its new campaign. It noted that a 30-second version of the ad will air the following day, but did not specify where.
However, the curious can get a peek at the ad prior to the event. "On the day of the game, Audi guests who have previously opted in on Audi's Web site will have the opportunity to view the spot early on a separate, dedicated Web site," Audi of America said. "That Web site will also host additional footage from the filming and production of the ad."
The stars of the commercial will be the Audi R8, the company's first midengine sports car, and actor Alex Rocco, who portrayed the character of Moe Greene in the first Godfather.
