Audi Might Build Quattro Coupe Production Car

    Just the Facts:
    • Audi is considering a production version of the Quattro concept from Paris.
    • If green-lighted, it would be a low-volume car assembled by ItalDesign.
    • Officials in Ingolstadt want to keep the two-seat coupe's price tag below $140K.

INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi is considering building a limited-production version of its Quattro concept from last week's Paris auto show, with low-volume assembly handled by new Volkswagen AG subsidiary ItalDesign Giugiaro. The projected price tag for the two-seat coupe would not exceed $139,000, according to Audi officials.

Word of the possible limited-edition Quattro was reported by AutoWeek, which suggested that Audi might pursue a technical tie-up with another sibling, Lamborghini, which is developing expertise in carbon-fiber.

The Quattro concept, meant to evoke memories of the original early-'80s two-door of the same name, is built on a shortened and lightened version of the Audi RS5 chassis, with a lightweight body made of aluminum and carbon-fiber.

The concept is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine rated at a claimed 408 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque.

Inside Line says: We can envision a WRC edition, perhaps with Sebastien Loeb behind the wheel if Audi can wrest him away from the French. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

You know I thought I was going to be able to afford this car. Its beautiful and all but the price tag!!!! COME ON AUDI, its not an exotic design, nor does it have a v10. I thought it was going to be around 40K or lower. BUmmer -_-

WRC???  Uh.. the rules changed 1.6L is the max. Maybe a WRC looking car like the WRX STI, which didn't even meet the old rules of 2.0L. PS. it will never happen, Skoda is the only VW owned brand that will continue to go after the WRC and practically no one in the US even knows what a Skoda is.

akula - i understand your sentiment - but no mass produced car costs 85-90k.  If the skip the aluminum and carbon fiber - then you would basically have an A5.... so what would be the point??  Audi wantst o be more exclusive... I won't be able to afford this - but I'm not mad at them... it's not what they want to be.

People - there is no way it would be 140k in the US.  Its exchange rates at work again.  I can't believe people don't understand that yet.
Also - this car would have to be more expensive than the RS5...it's built on the same chassis using lightweight materials.  That means that it is more expensive to build.  So they have to charge more.  It is going to be a limited production also.  Just like every RS vehicle - which means again - you have to charge more.
So all the people complaining on here can't afford it.  If you want a cheap car then this is not it.  The original Sport Quattro was built to homologize a race car... it was a rare car also.  It was NOT meant to be mass produced either which is why those cars still hold their value.  So this strategy with this car is not strange at all.

It would have been a nice car slotted above the TT and below the S5/RS5. At $100,000 or more, I think I'd rather have an R8.

here's your headline: all comments are in agreement!

that's got to be a first ever!

and why fix it if it ain't broke?

$140K for this? if i'm not mistaken, this car is basically a badass street ready rally car. yes? in which case, i don't think it should even break the $100K mark. however, if i am mistaken, and this is supposed to be something much more, then i still think it is overpriced, because it obviously doesn't project that image that people expect to get when they pay $140K for a car, otherwise i wouldn't be arguing the price (if you don't care about the image your car projects, get yourself a nissan versa. you get 2 more seats and you save yourself $132K. but if you do, buy the R8, it certainly projects that image.)

but aside from the price, this is a sweet f---ing car.

I agree. It would be stupid for Audi to put this car in the same price bracket as the R8. It is just built off of a modified existing RS5 chassis anyways and only has 408 hp for that price?
