    What is it?
    Audi Allroad quattro

    What's special about it?
The Allroad quattro is an A6 Avant modified to be much more capable in off-road situations. At the same time, it retains the sporting and luxury cues that Audi is known for. The Allroad comes standard with quattro, Audi's permanent all-wheel-drive system. In addition, Allroads equipped with six-speed manual transmissions can be ordered with an electronically operated dual-speed transfer case. Placing the Allroad in the low range gives the vehicle improved capabilities over particularly tough terrain or steep uphill grades. Another feature is the 4-Level suspension. Both axles have air- spring struts controlled by separate height sensors. The sensors monitor vehicle and environmental conditions and adjust ride height automatically to one of four different preset height levels. Low ride heights are used for freeway speeds and smooth pavement, and high ride heights are selected for off-road conditions. The maximum difference between minimum and maximum ride heights is 6.6 centimeters. Despite the Allroad's rugged personality, it still offers a luxurious interior and a 250-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine.

    Why should you care?
Both BMW and Mercedes have developed SUVs in order to compete in America's huge truck market. Audi has gone a different route with its Allroad quattro. The approach is similar to that of Subaru and its Legacy Outback. But to simply call the Allroad a more expensive Outback would be an injustice. The Allroad's suspension and optional transfer case are truly unique features. In videotape provided by Audi, the Allroad's off-road capabilities looked closer to an SUV's than a wagon's. If you want something that is fast, stable, richly appointed, and not afraid of dirt or rocks, the Allroad might be for you.
