What is it?
Audi A8 L 6.0 Quattro<
What's special about it?
Audi's flagship sedan receives a new 12-cylinder engine. Developed in conjunction with the good folks at Volkswagen, this W-configuration interweaves two V6 powerplants in a package the size of a V8. Roaring forth 420 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, it's the largest capacity and most powerful engine in any sedan, and should leave its only 12-cylinder competitor, the BMW 750iL, in the dust.
Mated with the five-speed Tiptronic, either available in the traditional gated configuration or with optional steering wheel-mounted buttons, this lightweight aluminum engine rides on aluminum suspension components and wheels, and weighs a scarce 4,365 pounds (the least of any full-size luxury sedan). This is also the only 12-cylinder sedan with AWD; there is little argument as to the sporting nature of this incomparable vehicle.
Standard 18-inch wheels, twin tailpipes and "W12" emblems distinguish the 6.0 from its A8 brethren. The seats are swathed in fine Valcona leather, and chrome and aluminum accents grace the severely chic interior.
Such options as leather cushions and rear passenger footrests, a fax machine integrated into the center armrest, and a TV/video unit should lessen the burden of riding in this car.
Why should you care?
Sometimes, money can buy happiness. We can't wait to test-drive this latest Teutonic offering.
