What Is It?

2006 Audi A6 avant

What's Special About It?

Audi executives didn't say much about the all-new wagon version of the A6, but Detroit is the first opportunity for those of us in the U.S. to get a look at it. The summer of 2005 will be our first opportunity to buy one.

Like the A6 sedan, the avant is easily distinguished from the crowd by its over-the-top front grille. In back, though, the wagon is the more attractive of the two to our eyes, with its artfully detailed taillights. Behind that tail you'll find about 20 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seat. With the seat folded, just under 59 cubic feet are available.

As in the past, Audi will offer the A6 wagon with only a V6 engine and an automatic transmission in the U.S. Now that the V6 is up to 255 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque, though, you can expect plenty of smooth, refined power whenever you need it.

Luxury wagons usually aren't the most practical utility vehicles, as their cargo bays are typically lined in beautiful carpet and allergic to dirt. The A6 avant aspires to be a bit more useful to its owners, as it offers an easy-to-clean plastic tray underneath its carpeted load floor — perfect for muddy hiking boots, says Audi. You can even remove the floor entirely to accommodate weekend gardening projects. For traveling types, an adjustable rail system and a large cargo net make it easy to keep luggage confined.

What's Edmunds' Take?

We already think highly of the A6 sedan, a luxurious, refined and fun-to-drive premium sedan. The avant version should offer all of its virtues along with serious practicality for those who need it. — Erin Riches
