Audi has lowered the drag coefficient, lightened the chassis and added a manual shift indicator light to help increase the gas mileage of its bread-and-butter vehicle.
Audi spokesman Christian Bokich told Inside Line that the 2.0-liter TFSI front-wheel-drive sedan with the multitronic transmission now gets 23 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while the bigger and more powerful 3.2-liter FSI six-cylinder manages to get 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Audi promises more efficiency-driven technology in the near future, including a next-generation navigation system that will indicate the most fuel-efficient route.
Power isn't compromised, either: The 2.0-liter TFSI develops 211 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.2-liter V6 lays down 265 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. That means 0-60-mph times of 6.3 seconds for the V6 and 6.5 for the four-cylinder A4.
Audi continues to be focused on its current lineup and future releases, so SEMA is out of the question this year, said Bokich: "SEMA is a huge force, but now we need to let people know what our core product is about."
The 2009 A4 will be on dealer lots in September. Pricing will start at $32,700 for the sedan, while the A4 Avant will carry an MSRP of $34,500.
What this means to you: The new A4 has a great combination of sportiness, power and class. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent

With less than 12K miles on the odometer, my 2009 Audi 3.2 A4 V6 is getting 35mpg running on cruise control at a steady 65mph. Around town, mileage almost always is north of 25mpg. What a shame that Audi dropped the V6 in the A4. While the 4 banger puts out a few pounds more torque, it is far too noisy for a so-called "near luxury" vehicle.
