2008 Geneva Auto Show Wrap-up: Audi A4 DTM

GENEVA — Audi publicly unveiled a DTM racing version of its A4 at the Geneva auto show. The new model was developed by Audi Sport engineers and technicians for the German Touring Car (DTM) series.

Code-named "R14," the Audi A4 DTM is identifiable as the racing version of the fourth-generation A4 by a conspicuous single-frame grille and white LED daytime low-beam lights. Although DTM racing regulations do not allow the use of Audi's FSI, Quattro or TDI technologies, Audi still managed to squeeze 460 horsepower out of its 4.0-liter V8.

The DTM's bodywork is made from high-grade carbon-fiber composite. The car achieves "the most logical optimization of the aerodynamics allowed within the framework of the regulations," says Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport. The Audi A4 DTM has already ventured thousands of miles for testing and is meeting up with its future rivals during the official DTM testing this week in Mugello, Italy.

What this means to you: We'll see if the new Audi A4 DTM is quick enough for Mattias Ekström, the series' defending champion. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
