INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi on Friday confirmed that the A1 Sportback will debut in early 2012, but told Inside Line it is not coming to the U.S.
The A1 Sportback, a five-door compact, will be sold in Europe for the U.S. equivalent of $22,921.
The A1 Sportback will be offered with a choice of seven engines and an optional Internet connection, said the German automaker.
Powertrain choices include four TFSI gasoline engines and three TDI diesel engines. Output on the engine lineup ranges from 86 to 185 horsepower. Audi said in a statement that some of the engines are linked to a seven-speed S tronic transmission.
The A1 Sportback comes standard with four seats. A fifth seat is a no-cost option.
Inside Line says: You'll have to admire the Audi A1 Sportback from afar.

Great mileage, numerous power train choices, upscale reliability & resale. Really.. what's not to like? Something in between the TT & the upcoming VW 2 seater size wise. Gotta ride better than the mini's.

Oh please, don't take a holier than thou approach. American commutes and roads are not meant for these types of small cars and they never will be volume sellers here. We already have the GTI and the new Beetle, the A1 would make very little sales here.

The comments prove that the U.S. is indeed not ready for a great little car like the A1/S1.

No point, it won't sell, and its going to be overpriced compared to the Golf/GTI/Beetle.

Suck, VW Group should bring over the Scirocco instead. Not this piece of steaming dung.

I regret the VW group does not offer a locally made premium subcompact car (A1/Polo/Skoda Fabia) on the US market.
It makes sense not to import the A1 because at $22K, this is a base 86HP and stripped model.
Going top of the line with all the options means going close to $40K. No one is going to pay for that.
OTOH, I believe a US made Polo with the brilliant 1.2 TFSI and the dry sump twin clutch DSG would sell well against the Fit/2/Fiesta, provided that prices remain close to competitors'
if VW want to reach their ambitious yearly 800k vehicle sold, they need to widen their palette.
They should also offer Kia-like warranty programs to inspire confidence too.

I want Audi to bring this car here. It's small, nimble, fun, fast, and very luxurious. They even have a 2.0TDI model in Europe now and there will a S1 Quattro soon.
karz4life10 you comment makes no sense. The A4 is a great car, is actually quite large, and has nothing to do with the much smaller A1.

I completey agree ttbuyer, if the A4 is small and really has no point in driving it, then why would you get an A1 sportback.

Not attractive, not coming to America: who cares?
