Aston Martin One-77 Breaks 220 at Nardo

NARDO, Italy — Aston Martin's limited-edition One-77 supercar has broken 220 mph during testing at the Nardo test track in southern Italy.

Its 220.007mph run "surpassed all predictions," says Aston Martin of the car's maximum speed, which will make it the fastest road-going Aston yet. The current record-holder is the now-obsolete Vanquish, which just breaks 200 mph.

Aston reckons there is more to come from the 7.3-liter V12-engined One-77, given that conditions at Nardo were windy. Active aerodynamics have contributed to the carbon-fiber-bodied coupe's impressive turn of speed, which puts it firmly among an exclusive bunch of supercars.

Development of the One-77 will continue early into 2010, for deliveries in the middle of the year. Each of the 77-strong run of cars will cost $1.6 million.

Inside Line says: Aston should re-establish itself as a maker of ultimate supercars with the One-77. — Richard Bremner, Correspondent
