GAYDON, England — The first production Aston Martin V12 Zagato will debut in mid-February at the Kuwait Concours d'Elegance.

Based on the company's V12 Vantage and developed in partnership with Italian coachbuilder Zagato, the V12 Zagato is slated to be assembled in a limited run of 150 cars, with the first cars to be delivered later this year. Prices start at $518,000.

The V12 Zagato first appeared in prototype form last May at Villa D'Este Concours at Lake Como, Italy. The car made its racing debut shortly after that at the Nürburgring 24 Hour race.

Aston Martin was purchased from Ford Motor Company in 2007 by a group of investors, including Kuwaiti-based Investment Dar. The group is headed by David Richards, founder of Prodrive.

Inside Line says: This is one of those rare cars that stands out even among the rarest of exotics.

This is probably a good investment in the long run, but lookwise I'd rather get the base car like many other people here and save the money and invest the remainder on something else. Zagato has been doing the same thing on Aston Martins for over a decade - enlarged hole with those square/rectangular mesh grille bulging out, double bubble tops, two circular tail lights. At least they are more tastefully done than what most Euro tuners are doing these days but that doesn't mean the look is enhanced from the base cars. Also the GT-R cowl copy (black A-pillar, sloping down roof etc, the whole effect) is a disgrace to Zagato name.

Why pay more money for a purposely uglified Aston Martin?  I don't get it.
