GAYDON, England — Aston Martin is expected to introduce its first-ever electric car — a battery-powered version of its Cygnet compact — in 2013.
According to Britain's Car magazine, the Cygnet EV will piggyback on the upcoming electric version of the Toyota iQ, the tiny commuter car on which the standard $50,000 Cygnet is based. The electric Toyota iQ is slated to reach the market in 2012.
In an interview in the current issue of Car, Aston CEO Ulrich Bez says, "We believe there is a market for an urban runabout which is easy to park and very economical yet almost as well appointed as a Vantage."
Car said the standard Cygnet will be a money-maker for Aston, which is paying Toyota a wholesale price of around $16,000 a car.
Inside Line says: According to Car, "This bird yields a fatter margin than some of the Aston Martin coupes and roadsters boasting two or three times as many cylinders."

They are hoping to expand their brand appeal to some folks who could never afford a real AM, maybe someone who would buy a Volvo C30 or BMW 1-series?
