2010 Acura ZDX Recalled

    • Honda is recalling nearly 2,000 2010 Acura ZDX vehicles due to an airbag issue.
    • NHTSA says the front passenger airbag may not deploy properly due to a potential problem with the dashboard covering material.
    • No actual incidents have been reported.

    WASHINGTON — Honda is recalling 1,854 2010 Acura ZDX vehicles because the front passenger's front airbag may not deploy properly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

    "During the manufacturing process, the dashboard covering material may have not been properly laser scored to allow complete deployment of the front passenger's SRS airbag," said the NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "In the event of a crash, the airbag will not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury."

    The ZDX models involved in the recall were built between November 12, 2009 and March 22, 2010. Honda on Tuesday said no incidents have been reported as a result of the airbag problem.

    Honda said it will notify owners of the recall on April 21. Acura dealers will inspect the dashboard covering material and replace it for free. Owners may contact Acura at 800-382-2238.

    For one thing, there will ALWAYS be recalls, even from the best automakers.  While extensive testing is done prior to launch of a new vehicle, it is impossible to always catch every glitch in a design pre-debut. As for today's technology and RnD efforts being able to produce less recalls - I think it's the exact opposite.  Technology, while far advanced, has the potential to fail.  Also, with autos being packed with ever increasing features and new technology at such fast pace, there is bound to be more glitches rather than not.

    I do agree that the recent spike in recalls is automakers attempting to cover their asses in the wake of the Toyota recall scandal.

    You bring up a very good point about the recent rash of recalls and I think the true answer might me a litte of both. I would think that with today's technology and the massive amount of RnD (both time and money) spent you would see less and not more recalls but maybe not.

    I guess if you're going to screw up, you may as well do it in a big way.  Amplifying the already white-hot undesirability of Acura's overpriced answer to a market demand that doesn't appear to really exist is the fact that it also has defects.  Just the thing to really entice all those potential buyers who aren't lining up for this, er, whatever it is.

    It's just incredible to me that Honda/Acura would waste so much effort on such a high-priced niche vehicle in the first place, when they have a gaping hole in the sports-oriented end of their line-up(s).  Nothing in the works to replace NSX/S-2000, or even the long-gone Prelude.  Surely one model to slot into that end of the line-up would have made better sense than the ZDX, with or without recalls.

    A ploy by who? Honda (Japanese company) volunteered to take these vehicles down, and the car is assembled in Canada. How is American "crappyness" somehow involved in this recall?

    @justinlink: Do you know they've ONLY sold 1,854?  I don't think so, your implication that 1,854 is significant is null.  Acura did their do diligence in recalling.  Now if they waited till a few hundred people died as a result from the problem then it would be significant, that however hasn't be reported so....

    yes, f1ipmode, because a recall related to proper operation of a passive safety feature is something worth sweeping under the rug.

    perhaps they've only sold 1,854 of these hideous things, and they've recalled every single one of them?  that might be significant.

    I don't get it. I have been seeing a recall from an auto manufacturer every week or bi-weekly. Is this coming out of scare that they might be the next Toyota scandal or is it just that overall quality / final check engineers have become more relaxed to get higher yield and for automakers to make more money when a new product is out.
