Acura TSX Recalled Over Fire Hazard

    Just the Facts:
    • Honda is recalling its 2004-'08 Acura TSX models to fix a power steering hose.
    • The hose could cause underhood fires.
    • The recall is expected to begin on May 28, and affects 167,225 TSX models.

TORRANCE, California — Honda is recalling 167,255 of its 2004-'08 Acura TSX models due to possible premature deterioration of the power steering hose. The defect could cause an underhood fire, the automaker said.

The power steering hose may deteriorate prematurely when exposed to prolonged high, under-hood temperatures and could crack and leak power steering oil, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Oil leaking onto a hot exhaust pipe will generate smoke and a burning smell, and could potentially result in an underhood fire," said Honda in paperwork filed with the government.

The recall is expected to begin on May 28. Honda will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicles to an Acura dealer. Acura dealers will install a new, heat-resistant hose, free of charge. Owners may contact the automaker at 800-382-8039.

I found this article today as I was searching for reasons why my 2005 TSX makes a squealy/screechy noise on occasion (sounds like it's coming from the steering).  Someone referred to it as sounding like "Chewbacca."  Do you think this could be related???  Anyone else have that noise emanating from the steering column?

Somehow these recalls aren't all that surprising at all.  Wit all those movey bits under the hood, I'm a bit pleased that so little goes wrong with each car.  Granted some cars' flaws are bigger than others...

Quality of these Japanese makes has simply spiraled out of control these past 5 yrs. What happened?  Looks like the American makes (expecially Ford) and Korean makes are making tremendous gains against the Japanese brands..

And this was a very common problem to the early model BMWs (early 90s)...
good thing it didn't cost me a lot of money to fix mine.  but surely it was a very embarassing scene everytime when I turned into the garage and smoke was coming out from under the hood.

Acura owners get the "Go get your car checked" message from Inside Line while Dodge Caliber owners get the more ominous...

"Inside Line says: Small and easily fixed mechanical problem, or the start of something involving Chrysler products?"
