"In some vehicles, airbag inflators can produce overpressurization of the driver's airbag inflator mechanism during airbag deployment," said Honda in a statement. "If an affected inflator deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator casing to rupture. Metal fragments could pass through the cloth airbag cushion material, possibly causing an injury or fatality to vehicle occupants."
Honda said the recall is expected to begin "over the next few months." It said owners can confirm their vehicle's recall status by checking the Honda recall Web site or Acura's recall Web site. It encouraged owners of the affected vehicles to "wait to receive a recall notice in the mail before scheduling an appointment with their local dealer."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Honda and Acura owners can also contact the automaker at (800) 999-1009. The government watchdog did not provide any documentation on injuries or fatalities related to the expanded recall on its Web site.
