2009 Acura TL Bigger, more powerful and stuffed full of new technology, the 2009 Acura TL is the company’s second all-new sedan this year.    Like the TSX before it, the new TL gets Acura’s new signature grille design up front while the rear end features a unique centerline crease along with dual exhaust outlets.  There are now two distinct models: a base front-wheel drive TL, and a new top-of-the-line model with all-wheel drive.  The base car gets a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 280hp and 254 pound-feet of torque.  Step up to the all-wheel drive model and you get a larger 3.7-liter V6 and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.    A brief drive in rural Connecticut gave us a feel for how the new engine and drivetrain work together.    First clip about torque steer  With 305 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, the TL’s new 3.7-liter V6 is the company most powerful production ever, but it doesn’t always feel quite so impressive from behind the wheel.    Second clip about engine power  One reason why the TL might not feel so quick is its size. It’s nearly six inches longer than the previous model and about 300 pound heavier when equipped with all-wheel drive.   Of course, the larger size means more interior space so the TL is one of the more accommodating sedans in its class.  Passenger room is generous and there are high quality materials throughout. We don’t love all the buttons on the center stack, but most of the controls are easy enough to figure out.   The TL is also one of the most advanced when it comes to new technology. There’s a dedicated iPod connection, Bluetooth connectivity and an optional navigation system that includes everything from restaurant guides to Doppler radar maps.    In other words, this new TL is much like the last one – fast, comfortable and loaded with features.   Adding the option of all-wheel drive does make it a more capable sports sedan, but its size dulls some of the fun.   Still, for a luxury sedan that’s only expected to top out at around $42,000, the 2009 Acura TL remains one of the best values in the segment.
