Acura RS-X prototype
What's special about it?
The RS-X prototype is the much-anticipated successor to the greatly loved Integra. There was a charged atmosphere of anticipation when the electric-blue concept car rolled out onto the show floor. Strong, fast and sexy looking, its styling seems sampled from the last two Integra model types and with a profile similar to that of the Toyota Celica. The RS-X is distinguished by short front and rear overhangs, large 18-inch alloy wheels, a low-profile greenhouse with slim A- and B-pillars, a short rear decklid and a large-mouth chrome exhaust pipe. The real joy of this new "Integra" is under the steeply raked, wedge-shaped hood. The RS-X is propelled by a "new generation" 2.0-liter, 16-valve DOHC engine with I-VTEC ("intelligent" variable valve timing and lift electronic control) and new VTC (variable timing control) technology that combine to produce nearly 200 horsepower, or an impressive 100 hp per liter. Given this kind of power, the RS-X will enhance the Integra's legacy of sporty performance. In addition to the hot powerplant, the prototype also features a six-speed manual shifter, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, side airbags, power sunroof, six-disc audio system, and performance-tuned, four-wheel independent suspension. Inside, perforated black leather trim, Recaro sport seats, short-throw shifter and silver-colored dash with a white-faced instrument cluster complete its racy image. The production model RS-X will be introduced at the New York Auto Show in April. Due to the popularity of the Integra name and the recognition it has with the public, and the vagueness of the prototype's moniker, don't be surprised if it's introduced as the all-new Integra.
Why should you care?
The Integra has long been a favorite of young male and female buyers who want great looks, zippy performance, superb handling and Japanese reliability. However, the current model is nearly 8 years old and in dire need of a renewal. Eight years is a long time for any model to be static, but especially a Honda product, which are regularly re-vamped (think Civic). So, a lot is expected of this fourth-generation Integra. Judging by the RS-X prototype Acura unveiled at this event, the waiting will be worth it.
