2008 Chicago Auto Show: 2009 Acura RL

CHICAGO — Acura has given its RL flagship sedan a midcycle freshening, with updated sheet metal and cabin, a larger engine, an improved chassis and even more tech features.

The exterior enhancements are relatively modest. But credit Acura with putting some energy — and money — into better hardware. The modifications include a new SOHC 3.7-liter V6 that makes 300 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, mated to an improved five-speed sequential automatic transmission, now fitted with paddle shifters.

Ride and handling get a boost from stiffer coil springs, more compliant shocks, beefier stabilizer bars, uprated bushings, improved steering and larger, more aggressive 18-inch wheels and tires.

Technology enhancements include active head restraints, a new Active Sound Control noise-abatement system and AcuraLink real-time weather information incorporated into the satellite communications system.

The cabin has been upgraded, with new gauges and controls, a revised steering wheel with optional wood trim and a roomier rear seat.

The 2009 Acura RL goes on sale this spring.

What this means to you: It still can't run with the big dogs, but the RL packs an awful lot of cutting-edge technology. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
