Detroit Show: Acura RDX Nears Production

DETROIT — Slated to go on sale this summer, Acura's new RDX makes its third appearance at the North American International Auto Show, this time as a "prototype" that is essentially production-ready.

The compact crossover vehicle, which will share its basic architecture with the next-generation Honda Element and CR-V, first appeared in concept form at the 2002 Detroit show. A more evolved concept was introduced at last year's show.

The 2007 RDX is the first of a new generation of luxury compact crossovers that are expected to be introduced by premium brands over the next several years. Infiniti and Lexus both reportedly have small CUVs in the pipeline, and Audi showed its crossoverlike Roadjet concept this week at the Detroit show.

Among the features on the RDX is a turbocharged 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed SportShift sequential automatic transmission. The RDX is fitted with a version of Honda's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive that made its appearance a year ago on the Acura RL sedan. The five-passenger RDX rides on 19-inch wheels and tires.

The '07 RDX goes into production this summer at Honda's plant in Marysville, Ohio. Prices are expected to start under $30,000.
