TORRANCE, Calif. — Acura has unveiled the production version of its second-generation 2007 MDX, which goes on sale in October with a bigger engine, a new chassis, and a longer wheelbase than the original.

The new MDX features a 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine that delivers 300 hp at 6000 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm. Acura said the new MDX has an EPA estimated mileage of 17 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. The previous MDX was equipped with a 253-hp 3.5-liter V-6. Like the '06 MDX, the new version is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission.

The redesigned all-wheel-drive MDX is longer, wider, and lower than the original. Acura said its engineers and designers "targeted the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne" when developing the all-new chassis. Testing was done at the Nürburgring racing circuit.

An optional sport package features an active damper system that adjusts to road conditions on a real-time basis, the company said. New for '07 is a power tailgate, the first on an Acura SUV. The cabin is driver-centric and features a 10-way power driver's seat and electronic tilt/telescoping steering wheel.

Also new for '07 are active head restraints and dual-stage knee bolsters for the driver and front seat passenger.

Pricing has not yet been announced.

What this means to you: Acura positions its MDX away from competitors like the Lexus RX350 and closer to more sporty models like the Porsche Cayenne and the BMW X5.
